Dieselmoottori tarvitsee runsaasti ilmaa toimiakseen oikein. Palamistapahtuman ilmantarve on kilowattia kohden noin 6,1m³ ilmaa tunnissa (4,5 m³/hv/h). Toimiakseen hyvin imuilman nopeus ei saa ylittää arvoa 3 m/sek. Palamistapahtuman lisäksi, jokainen moottori tarvitsee riittävästi korvausilmaa myös moottorin aiheuttaman lämmön poistamiseen. Tarvittavan korvausilman määrä on suunnilleen sama kuin palamiseen tarvittava ilma.
